1. Start with proof of manufacture, not a product list

A long catalogue is cheap to publish. In-house SMT, aging rooms and enclosure tooling are not. Ask who owns the production steps that affect your risk: panel incoming QC, assembly, burn-in and final packing.

Useful signals: a business licence that lists manufacturing, a live video tour during production hours, and engineers who answer without a relay. Weak signals: an office-only address, a product range that spans unrelated categories, and prices that change after every "check with the factory" delay.

Trading companies can still be useful for small mixed orders. For outdoor, high-brightness or private-label work, you want a direct engineering path. Our position is factory-direct OEM/ODM from Shenzhen; see the OEM/ODM page for the customization scope.

2. Score engineering depth on the hard SKUs

Indoor wall-mount signage is a crowded category. The comparison gets sharper on outdoor IP66, high-brightness window displays and narrow-bezel video walls, because those lines expose thermal design, optical bonding and service access.

Ask for the same three artefacts from every bidder: enclosure section drawing or photo of the thermal path, bonding method for window units, and how a field tech opens the cabinet without destroying the seal.

If a supplier cannot discuss cable glands, filter maintenance and automatic dimming on a 5000 nit outdoor unit, they are selling a panel inside a box, not an outdoor product. Cross-check claims against the outdoor IP66 line, the window display line and the LCD video wall line.

3. Treat compliance as a file pack, not a logo row

CE, FCC and RoHS marks on a website are not the same as the test report and DoC for the exact model you will import. Compare OEMs on whether they can name the file set for your destination market before deposit.

Ask which party is the manufacturer of record on the declaration, which lab ran the test, and whether the report covers the enclosure variant you are buying. A cheaper quote that cannot produce the file pack is not cheaper after customs delay.

ISO 9001 speaks to the manufacturing system. It does not replace model-level product compliance. Keep those two claims separate in your score sheet.

4. Compare quote structure, not only unit price

Force every bidder onto the same line items: panel brand or grade class, brightness sustained full-screen, OS image, CMS option, packing, spare parts kit, warranty term and FOB point.

Hidden gaps usually sit in sustained brightness versus peak brochure nits, spare modules, and who pays for the first failed sample revision. Write those into the RFQ so the low bid cannot omit them.

For private-label programmes, add tooling ownership, lead time for cosmetic changes, and who holds the firmware repository. Those terms decide whether you can switch factories later without rebuilding the SKU.

5. Build a three-factory shortlist and one pilot

Run the five dimensions above as a score sheet. Keep three factories that clear a minimum on manufacture proof and compliance files. Order one pilot configuration from the top scorer before a volume PO.

  1. Manufacture proof. Licence scope, live production evidence, engineer access.
  2. Hard-SKU engineering. Outdoor, window or video-wall artefacts you can review.
  3. Compliance file pack. Named documents for the destination market.
  4. Quote structure. Same line items across bidders.
  5. Pilot path. Sample, revision rules, and written lead time.

If you need a worked example of outdoor rating choices before you score factories, use the IP65 vs IP66 outdoor display guide. For import file risks that often break a shortlist after deposit, read commercial display import compliance risks. For a factory-side buying process overview, see the China OEM buying guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I tell a real commercial display factory from a trading company?

Check that the business licence lists manufacturing, request a live production-hour tour, and ask technical questions that require an engineer. Trading companies often need a relay delay and cannot show enclosure tooling or aging capacity.

Which product lines best expose OEM capability?

Outdoor IP66, high-brightness window displays and narrow-bezel video walls. Those lines force thermal design, optical bonding and service access into the open. Indoor wall-mount alone is a weak filter.

What compliance documents should I compare across OEMs?

Ask for the declaration and test-report index for the exact model and destination market, plus who is named as manufacturer of record. Website certification logos are not enough for import clearance.

Should unit price be the first shortlist filter?

No. Align line items first: sustained brightness, OS, packing, spares, warranty and FOB point. Then compare price. A low unit price that omits spares or uses peak nits is not comparable.

How many factories should stay on the shortlist?

Three that clear manufacture proof and compliance file checks is enough. Run one pilot configuration with the top scorer before a volume purchase order.

Can TZD Display support private-label comparison programmes?

Yes. TZD Display is a Shenzhen factory-direct OEM/ODM. Customization can cover logo, enclosure, brightness, OS and CMS. Final specifications, MOQ, lead time and compliance files are confirmed per quoted model and market.
