Supermarket Shelf-Edge Screen Network — Deployment Blueprint
Shelf-edge digital is the highest-attention-per-euro screen in a supermarket — and the most punishing install: hundreds of metres of rail, millimetre-level depth budgets, and content that must change by category. This blueprint is the configuration TZD Display builds for supermarket shelf-edge networks.
The requirement
- Promotion strips along aisles, sized to shelf rail geometry
- ≤ 40 mm depth so screens never intrude into picking space
- Central campaign control with per-aisle and per-category targeting
- 16 h/day retail duty, installed without closing aisles
- Rollout across multiple stores on one platform
The configuration
| Element | Specification | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Stretched bar LCDs, tiled runs along rails | Matches shelf geometry; no standard panel fits |
| Depth | ≤ 40 mm total | Regulatory + ergonomic picking clearance |
| Brightness | 400–1000 nits with anti-glare | Readable at glance distance under retail lighting |
| Power/data | Rail bus for long runs; per-unit PSU for retrofits | Install cost halves on new-build aisles |
| Player | Integrated SoC per strip | No players to mount or steal at shelf level |
| CMS | Cloud, category & store-group targeting | Promotions scheduled from head office |
Why each decision matters here
Rail bus vs per-unit power. On new store builds, a central rail bus (power + data in the shelf rail) removes hundreds of PSU installs. On retrofits, per-unit PSUs win because rewiring live aisles costs more than the parts.
Ganged strips as one canvas. Adjacent strips are driven as a single logical canvas where the category planogram calls for it — one long dynamic price/promo band instead of fragmented tiles.
Anti-glare over raw brightness. Shelf screens are read at 0.5–1.5 m under bright retail lighting: glare control buys more readability per euro above ~700 nits than additional nits do.

Frequently Asked Questions
How are shelf screens powered along a whole aisle?
New builds use a central rail bus carrying power and data inside the shelf rail; retrofits typically use per-unit PSUs to avoid rewiring live aisles.
Can adjacent shelf screens act as one display?
Yes — strips are ganged into a single logical canvas where the category planogram calls for a continuous price/promotion band.
