A window-facing LCD has to remain readable through storefront glass while managing heat and nighttime glare. Start with site photos, exposure hours and viewing distance. The brightness ranges below are screening options, not guarantees of readability or specifications for every TZD model.
1. Brightness: assess sustained output at the site
Nits (cd/m²) describe display luminance; lux describes illumination falling on a surface. There is no universal lux-to-nit multiplier. Glass reflections, content contrast, viewing angle and solar heating all affect whether a customer can read the message.
| Brightness option | Site to evaluate | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| 700–1000 nits | Shaded or indirectly lit storefront | Readability test through the actual glass |
| 1500–2000 nits | Brighter storefront with limited direct exposure | Daytime content and reflection assessment |
| 2500–3000 nits | Directly sunlit window: assess thermal load | Sustained brightness and thermal derating data |
| 3500–5000 nits | High-exposure site where lower options fail testing | Site trial, power measurement and dimming limits |
Ask whether the quoted brightness is typical, minimum, peak or sustained, and record the measurement conditions. A window-facing indoor display is not automatically suitable for exposed outdoor installation.
2. Optical bonding and reflection control
Optical bonding fills an internal air gap with an optical material and can reduce internal reflections. It does not remove reflections from the shop window or guarantee that a lower-brightness unit will outperform a brighter one. Compare the complete optical stack under the same conditions.
- Bonding material: Request the quoted material, bonded layers and validation records. A material brand alone is not proof of the finished display's performance.
- UV exposure: Ask for the glass, adhesive and panel limits for the proposed installation; do not assume a treatment prevents all aging.
- Anti-glare surface: Check reflections, haze and text clarity using your own content and viewing angles.
3. Single-sided vs. double-sided window signage
| Type | Audience and position | Quote separately |
|---|---|---|
| Single-sided | One viewing direction, such as the street-facing window | Cabinet, mounting, optical stack and system |
| Double-sided (back-to-back) | Street and indoor audiences, or two-way circulation | Each face's brightness, total power, weight and depth |
Use WD-S for one intended viewing direction and assess WD-D when street-side and indoor audiences both matter. The two faces may need different brightness settings. Do not apply a fixed double-sided price premium: compare the configured quotations.
4. Mounting, ventilation and service access
Confirm the unit's weight, centre of gravity, mounting drawing, glass clearance and service access before ordering. The installer must assess the supporting structure and local electrical requirements.
- Suspended: Check rated fixing points, lifting method and access to power and data cables.
- Wall-mounted: Confirm bracket compatibility, ventilation clearance and the maintenance route.
- Floor-standing: Assess base stability, wheel locks if fitted and obstruction of customer circulation.
- Cabinet depth: Use the approved drawing, including connectors and mounting hardware, rather than a generic slim-profile claim.
5. Auto-dimming: agree the behaviour, then measure
An ambient sensor or a schedule can reduce brightness after dark. Verify sensor placement, minimum brightness, manual override and behaviour after reboot or network loss.
- Thermal load: Lower output may reduce heat; ask for measured temperatures at the agreed brightness and ambient conditions.
- Power: Measure watts at daytime and nighttime settings. No universal energy-saving or lifetime percentage applies to every display.
- Site rules: Have the operator or installer confirm applicable nighttime brightness and advertising restrictions.
6. Size and resolution: test the message, not just pixels
Measure the usable window opening, sight lines and viewing distance. Obtain the model's active area and overall dimensions. Test campaign text at its intended size before deciding whether FHD or 4K adds value.
Window width alone does not determine screen size. Include mounting clearance, portrait or landscape orientation, font size and the distance from the pavement in your RFQ.
7. CMS: content management across stores
For multi-store deployment, compare a CMS against local playback using your actual workflow. Confirm these functions in a demonstration rather than assuming they are included:
- Remote playlists and schedules by store and time
- Online status and fault alerts
- Store groups and role-based account permissions
- White-label options and their licensing limits
Record licence fees, account ownership, offline playback, update support and any white-label limitations in the quotation. Local playback can still be appropriate for a single site.
Request a window display OEM quote
Send site photos, glass details, exposure hours, viewing distance, screen size, face count, quantity and destination market. Ask TZD Display to confirm brightness, bonding, mounting, CMS, documents and commercial terms for the final model in writing.

How many nits do I need for a window-facing display?
Choose brightness after assessing sunlight, reflections and content through the actual glass. Ask for sustained output and thermal conditions, then validate a sample on site. A lux reading cannot be converted to nits using a fixed multiplier.
What does optical bonding change?
Optical bonding reduces reflections at an internal air gap. It does not remove the storefront glass reflection; the complete optical stack and viewing conditions still need evaluation.
Should I choose a single-sided or double-sided window display?
Choose single-sided for one audience direction, or double-sided for street and indoor viewers. Compare each face's brightness, total power, weight, cabinet depth and configured price rather than a fixed premium.
Can a high-brightness window display run 24/7?
Only use continuous operation if the quoted model is rated for it under the planned thermal conditions. Agree dimming, ventilation, burn-in records and acceptance criteria; a generic commercial-display label is not sufficient.
